"The Netflix shipping centers help us deliver an outstanding home-entertainment experience," said Reed Hastings, Netflix CEO and co-founder. "Netflix customers who already were passionate about our services rave about the one-day and two-day turnaround these centers provide."
The continued opening of shipping centers reinforces Netflix's leadership in the rapidly emerging market of subscription-based online DVD rental. The centers strive to regionally replicate the company's success and experience in the San Francisco Bay Area. Netflix opened its first facility five years ago in the Bay Area, and today 3.8 percent of all households in the Bay Area are Netflix subscribers. The region has received generally next-day service for four years.
update Blockbuster is quietly testing a new DVD subscription-rental program, aimed directly at undercutting competition from Web-based mail-order service Netflix.
The video-rental behemoth has started experimenting with a monthly, all-you-can-rent subscription model in four major U.S. cities: Phoenix, Seattle, Houston and New York. The Dallas-based company said it began trials the week of July 24 for one test city, which it would not name, and launched service in New York on Monday.
